GTA WORKSHOP: Engaging Activities to Begin, and Conclude Class

Monday, September 18, 2017 :: 10:30-1:00 PM

Park Library | 413

Intended Audience: Graduate Teaching Assistants

Facilitated By: Mark Francek, Geography & Jennifer Sieszputowski, Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning

Don't begin class in a boring way! Capture students' attention immediately with these ten different warm up activities to introduce content for any discipline. These "hooks" for students attention involve use of media, movement, and formative assessment. Proceed then with your lecture, stopping around every ten minutes or so for students to reflect on content through class discussion, rewriting notes, low-stakes quizzes, and diagramming. Use various closure activities like exit tickets, two-minute papers, and "So What" (What is it from this lesson that I should be able to remember three years from now? Why?) to consolidate and internalize your most important points.

A delicious lunch will be provided.
